PWLが見つけた素敵な海外キルターさんをご紹介。PWL杉江が直接コンタクトをとり、パッチワークのこと、プライベートなこと。Q&A形式であれこれ質問してみました！第２回目の海外キルターさんは、この方。スイス出身で現在はドイツ、ベルリン在住のYara Greuter (@qvilted)さんです。

あなたのことについて少し教えてください。 Tell us about yourself.
こんにちは、わたしはヤラ。多文化な背景をもつ家族のもとにスイスで生まれました。バーゼル造形学校でタイポグラフィを学び、ビジュアルコミュニケーションの学位を取得。数年間、自分のデザイン事務所を経営していて、経営自体はとても面白かったのだけれど、グラフィックデザインに限界を感じてしまって．．．そこで、昨年２０１５年に長年のパートナーと、フレンチブルドッグのエミールと一緒に、新天地ドイツのベルリンに引っ越したの。それからオペレーション担当マネージャーとして働いている。ソーイングする時間は限られるけど、常に作品は作り続けてるわ。 Hi! I’m Yara, I was born in Switzerland with a multi-cultural family background. I have a degree in visual communication from the Basel School of Design where I focused on typography. I ran my own design studio for a couple of years until I kind of lost interest in graphic design but was very interested in the business side of running a company. Together with my longtime partner (and Emil, our french bulldog), I moved to Berlin early 2015 for a change of scenery then I got a job as an operations manager. My sewing time is limited but I try to always have one or two quilts that I am working on.
パッチワーク(キルト)をはじめたきっかけを教えてください。。
What inspired you to start making patchwork(quilts)?
１６歳のとき、 アメリカの東海岸に住む親戚の家で過ごす機会があったの。週末になるとアーミッシュ[※]の農場を訪れ、彼らの作る美しいアーミッシュキルトに魅了されたわ。彼らが織りなす色や形に心奪われ、その生活様式に感銘を受けた。今となっては、私は彼らのキルトが、代々伝承される宝物のような要素に惹かれていたのね。彼らのキルトは世代を超えて受け継がれる程、丈夫に出来ている。例えば、１６年経った今でも、ソファに座る私の傍らには、そのとき買ったキルトが寄り添っているように。 私はキルターとしてはまだ新人。初めて作ったのは３年前。ドレスを作ろうとしてインターネットで作り方を検索しているときに、偶然モダンキルトに遭遇。一瞬で心惹かれたわ。 初めてのキルトは小さな弟のために。シンプルなハーフ・スクエア・トライアングルで彼の大好きな色を使って作った。そのときはちゃんとした技術もわからず、今思い返すとほんとうにおかしいけれども、最後までやり遂げたことを誇りに思うわ（笑）。 ※アーミッシュとは、アメリカ合衆国のペンシルベニア州・中西部などやカナダ・オンタリオ州などに居住するドイツ系移民（ペンシルベニア・ダッチも含まれる）の宗教集団である。移民当時の生活様式を保持し、農耕や牧畜によって自給自足生活をしていることで知られる。原郷はスイス、アルザス、シュワーベンなど。人口は20万人以上いるとされている。（Wikipediaより引用） When I was 16, I spent some time with my relatives on the US-east coast. We visited Amish farms on the weekends and admired their beautiful quilts. I was drawn to the colors and shapes and was generally very impressed by the Amish lifestyle. Now that I am older I also realize that what I liked about those quilts was their heirloom factor. They were made to last and be handed down from one generation to the next. 16 years later I am actually sitting on my couch writing this, an Amish quilt from back then lying next to me. I am still quite a “new quilter”. The story of the first quilt I ever made (in 2013) I was trying to make a dress. So I was browsing through tutorials and stumbled across the modern quilting movement. And was immediately hooked. I made a first quilt for my little brother. It was a very simple HST quilt in his favorite colors. I didn’t know much skills back then and looking at it now gives me chills but also makes me feel proud to have kept going.
パッチワークが好きな理由を教えてください。
What do you love about patchwork(quilting)?
キルトは、アートであると同時に機能性のある作品でもあるところがとても好き。キルトを制作するプロセスは、私の少し内向的な性格にも合っている。長い時間を、ピーシングやキルティングをして一人で過ごすことが好き。
布のかけらが繋がってブロックになり、そのブロックが集まってキルトのトップに仕上がる。自分の作品づくりがこのような行程を経ていく様を見ていくことが何よりも楽しい。
残念ながらスイスやドイツでは、アメリカのようなキルト文化の絆のようなものは少ないかな。だから私はオンライン・コミュニティが好き。私にとって、オンライン・コミュニティを通じて世界中のモダンキルターと知り合えたことは、キルトを始めてから一番と言っていいほどの喜びよ。その人たちのおかげで初心者のは私はたくさんのことを学び、日々刺激を受けることが出来ている。 I love that I am creating a piece that is equally a piece of art and a functional object. The process of making a quilt fits my introverted tendencies a lot; I love the long hours of piecing and stitching by myself. But I also love seeing how I can turn fragments into a cohere unity. When single pieces of fabrics become blocks, and when blocks become a new quilt top. Seeing your project taking shape this way is such a great feeling. But, quilting in Switzerland and Germany doesn’t have as strong cultural ties as it does in the US.That is why I love our online community.Becoming part of this great online community of modern quilters is one of the greatest things that have happened to me in the last three years. I’ve met people from all over the world! These people were there to guide me through my rookie beginnings and inspire me on a daily basis.
またその反対に難しさは何ですか？？ On the other hand, what is the difficult thing about it? 自分のブランドを持つことは、とても楽しいわ。でも、多くの人は未だにキルトに対して「古くさい」、「配色がいまいち」、「柄物の生地」といった偏ったイメージを持っている。ヨーロッパではキルトにあまり馴染みが無く、ブランケットくらいにしか思っていないの。そこで、私がキルトがいかに現代的なデザイン性を持った物であるかを見せてあげると、とても感動しくれる。それから、どんなクリエイティブな仕事でも同じだけれども、「縫うこと」のモチベーションを保つのは本当に難しい。あとは、他の作家さんと自分の作品をあまり比べすぎないように心がけている。まずは私らしく、私らしい作品を作り続けることが目標ね。 Working on my own brand is certainly fun. But a lot of people have certain image in their heads of what quilting is: granny-style, brown and pink, novelty fabrics. Quilts are still foreign objects to many Europeans, they keep calling them blankets.When I show them that a quilt can be a piece of contemporary design work, they are mostly quite smitten. As with every creative job, it is hard for me to keep my (sewing) mojo going sometimes. I also have to watch out to never compare my work with everybody else’s too much. My goal is to keep doing my own thing and keep building my own visual language. あなたのインスピレーションの源はなんですか？それがどのように作品に影響していますか？
Where do you get your inspiration from? and how does it affect your design? やっぱり出身国であるスイスのグラフィックデザインと、タイポグラフィーに大きな影響を受けている。グリットや黒や白の配色だったり。反対に、あまりデザインがクリーンになり過ぎないよう、固くなりすぎないように気をつけてる。故郷と違い、複雑でごちゃごちゃしたベルリンという街に移り住んだことで、これから先私の作品にどのように影響してくるか楽しみよ。
I am hugely influenced by my background in Swiss graphic design and typography. Grids and lots of black and white.On the other hand, I am trying to get away from designs that are “too clean” and strict. And living in Berlin is impacting this process. More chaos, more disruption. I am excited about where this city’s influence might lead in the coming months and years.

You have your own website and also run a business of selling commissioned quilts. What sort of customers do you have?
正直いうと、あまりビジネスとしては成功しているとは言えないわね。多くの人が私のキルトを気に入ってくれるけれど、値段を聞くとショックを受ける。でも、個人的にはこれ以上価格を下げることはできない。もともと価値のある物に、売れないからと値段を下げるくらいなら、あまり売れなくても良いと思っているわ。まずは、私は自分のためにキルトを作っているのであり、利益のために作っているのではないのだから。
To be honest I don’t really run a business with the quilts I make.People like my quilts a lot but are always pretty shocked when I tell them the price. Though, I simply can’t price my quilts as low as a lot of quilts you stumble upon. But I’d rather take the chance of not selling or selling fewer than selling cheap something that is worth a lot more. First of all, I make quilts for myself and for displaying them, not for profit.
あなたの作品は、トラディショナルな要素をもった作品もあれば、とても自由であったり、空白をうまく利用したグラフィカルな作品もありとても素敵です。色や柄を多用しているときでも、全体的に調和されていますね。デザインするときに気をつけていることは何ですか？
We love how your work have varieties of styles, from traditional to minimal modern. I love the recent works with very simple graphical design using white space. Even when you use many different colors and printed fabrics, they are very harmonized. Is there any tips when you design?
ありがとう！私のスタイルはとてもミニマル。常に色選びには制限を持たせているし、単色の方がプリント柄よりも好き。あえてプリント柄を多様するときでも、背景色が同じトーンになるようになど纏まりを考えている。私のキルティングの多くは直線的で、花模様や羽模様のようなキルティングはまずないわね。この、直線が私のキルトをよりグラフィカルで落ち着いた作品に仕上げていると思うの。
First, thank you so much! My style is very minimalistic, I try to always keep my color choices limited and prefer solids over prints. If I go wild and use a large mix of prints, I prefer to tie everything together for example with one neutral background color. Also my quilting is almost always some sort of straight lines, no florals, no feathers. This also adds to a more toned down and graphic appearance of the quilt.
尊敬するキルターさんはいますか？それは誰ですかそしてどうしてその人の作品が好きですか Do you have any quilters that you adore or respect? Who is it and why do you like her(his) work? Heather Jonesのキルトスタイルが大好き。他にも、Maranoni、Folk fibersのMaura Ambrose、Latifah saafir、Zak Fosterなど。古典的なアーミッシュキルトが大好き。Gee’s bend quilts もいつか実物にお目にかかりたいわ。（もしくは彼女の本から作品を作ってみたい）Carolyn Friedlander は、ずっと好き。彼女の生地を買いだめしているほど。彼女のちょっと変わったデザインがとてもいいの。 I adore the quilt-styles of Heather Jones, Maranoni, Maura Ambrose from folk fibers , Latifah Saafir, Zak Foster and many more. I am a huge fan of original Amish quilts and would love to see some of Gee’s bend quilts in person once (or at least get my hands on one of their books). Also Carolyn Friedlander is an all time favorite. I am a hoarder of her fabrics and love her quilt designs. She has a very distinct style that is a bit quirky which I love.
夢はありますか？５年後になにをしていると思いますか？ Where do you see yourself in 5 years? たくさんあるし、もちろん大きな夢も持っているわ！まずは、自分の作品を見てもらうための個展を開きたい。自分の中のグラフィックデザイナー魂が、オリジナルデザインの生地を作ってみたいと言ってるわ。モダンキルトの本も書いてみたい。そして、実用的な夢としては、ロングアームミシンを習ってみたい。できればミシンが欲しいわ。でも、そのためには大きなスタジオが必要ね（笑）一番身近な夢としてはオンラインで繋がる友達と、さらに親交を深めたいと思っている。なので、ついに来年２月のQuiltconに行こうと思ってるのよ！ There are so many things I would love to do and I do indeed have big dreams. First, I’d really like to build a showcase and exhibit more of my quilts. The graphic designer in me is also dreaming of designing a line of fabric. I would love to write a book on modern quilts sometime. Also, a very practical dream of mine is to learn how to use and maybe in the future own a long arm quilting machine. But for that I’d need a big studio first, haha.For the very near future: My wish for some time has been to connect to more of my online friends in real life.
