PWLが見つけた素敵な海外キルターさんをご紹介。PWL杉江が直接コンタクトをとり、パッチワークのこと、プライベートなこと。Q&A形式であれこれ質問してみました！ 第１回目の海外キルターさんは、この方。ブラジル出身のLuciana Branco (@_mini_mais_)さんです。
お名前を、教えてください。 Will you tell us your name(brand name)? 私の名前はルシアーナ・ブランコ。ブランド名は『MINI+』(@_mini_mais_)。ポルトガル語で「Minimais」、ミニマルと言う意味よ。もちろん、ミニマルなデザインが大好きだから。
My name is Luciana Branco and my brand name is MINI+(@_mini_mais_). In Portuguese we read it like "Minimais", which means minimals, as I like minimal designs. あなたのことについて少し教えてください。 Tell us about yourself.
私はブラジル人。生まれも育ちもブラジル最大都市のサンパウロ。私の母は日本人。だから、小さな頃から日本的なしつけや教育を受けてきたわ。 数年前から、自分の中にある日本人としてのルーツを見つめ直すために、日本語を習い始めたの！そして今年、はじめて来日する機会があって。もちろん、すぐさま日本に恋に落ちたわ！また日本に行くのが待ちきれない！
I am Brazilian, born and living in São Paulo, our biggest city.
My mother’s family is Japanese, so I had a lot of Japanese influence in my upbringing.A few years ago I felt the need to reconnect with my nihonjin roots and started learning nihongo! This year was my first time visiting Japan and I absolutely fell in love with it! Can’t wait to go back!
パッチワーク(キルト)を始めたきっかけは？
What inspired you to start making patchwork(quilts)?
キルトをはじめたきっかけは、ほんの偶然。仕事を退職して、時間が出来たことを機に、母が「なにか新しいものを習ったらどう？」とソーイングの教室を薦めてくれて。そんな中、インターネットで色々調べていたら、たくさんの人がモダンなデザインで、新たなキルトのカタチを創りだしていることを知ったの！それが始まり。それからずっと制作活動をしてる。 I started quilting quite by chance. I had left my last job and my mother suggested I took sewing lessons, just to learn something new. I started researching and discovered people were reinventing quilts, with very modern designs, so I picked one as my first project. After that I never stopped!
パッチワークが好きな理由を教えてください。
What do you love about patchwork(quilting)?
そうね。私にとって、何よりキルトを作っていく行程が一番好きなところね。 まあ、いつも同じなのだけれど。（製図、型取り、ピーシング、キルティング、バインディング) 。とても多くのステップを踏むのに、でもやってみると毎回違う。いつもなにか新しいことに出会う。 私にとって、パッチワークやキルトはいつも自分自身に「辛抱強くなること」を教えてくれる。それぞれの行程に向き合って、すべての物事にしかるべき時間がかかるということ。とっても大切な教訓になってるわ。 The process of making a quilt is what I love the most. It involves so many different steps, that even though they are always the same – drawing, cutting, piecing, quilting, biding – it’s different every time. There’s always something new to try.In a more subjective level, patchworking and quilting are always teaching me patience. How to be present in the moment and understand that everything has it’s own time. I think it educates the soul! あなたの作品には、日本の技法(刺し子)が効果的に使われていますが、どうしてですか？ 刺し子以外に日本の伝統工芸で興味のある物はありますか？
We noticed that you are using Japanese craft skills(sashiko) in your work. Are you interested in any other japanese crafts besides Sashiko?
日本の伝統的なテキスタイル技術がとっても大好き。例えば織物や、襤褸(ぼろ)、型紙、天然染め、刺し子など。来日したときに、キルト作品に是非取り入れたくて、藍染めと絞りのワークショップを受けたのよ！ 日本のデザインは、シンプルで純粋で本当に大好き。
I love traditional Japanese textile techniques such as boro, stenciling, natural dyeing and sashiko designs. On my visit to Japan this year I took a shibori and indigo dying workshop, which I hope to incorporate in my quilts!I really love Japanese design, it’s simplicity and pureness.
あなたのインスピレーションの源はなんですか？それがどのように作品に影響していますか？
Where do you get your inspiration from? and how does it affect your work?
やはりインターネットが主な私のリサーチ場所ね。世界中の作品をすぐ見ることが出来て、そして刺激をうけることができるのが素晴らしい。この手軽さは、私に新しいデザインやキルトパターンを発見させてくれる。なのでいつも新しい作品づくりに参考になるインスピレーションを探しているわ。 I have to say Internet is my primal research place.It’s wonderful to be able to see works from all over the world and get inspired by them.This accessibility lets me discover and learn new designs and quilt blocks, so I’m always looking for something new to make.
尊敬するキルターさんはいますか？それは誰ですかそしてどうしてその人の作品が好きですか Do you have any quilters that you adore or respect? Who is it and why do you like her(his) work? はじめて影響をうけたキルターは、Season Evans。はじめて彼女の作品を見たときは、衝撃的だったわ。彼女のミニマルでシンプルなデザインが大好き！彼女が私をキルトの世界に引き寄せてくれたと言っても過言じゃない。もう一人は、Maura Grace。Folk Fibersというブランド。彼女のトラディショナルなデザインも好き。天然素材で染めた色使いは、ほんとうに素敵。それから、アーミッシュやGee’s Bend Quiltsも好きね。どちらもトラディショナルなんだけれど、色使いやデザインが一線を画している。 The first quilter that inspired me was Season Evans. When I first saw her work I was blown away! I absolutely love her minimalism and simplicity. I can say she’s the one who got me quilting!My other big inspiration is Maura Grace, from Folk Fibers. I love her traditional blocks and designs. The colors she achieves with natural dyeing are just stunning.Also love the Amish and Gee’s Bend Quilts. Both very traditional and very distinct in choice of colors and designs.
あなたの多くの作品は、シンプルなのに洗練されていて素敵です。特に配色が素敵です。配色するときに気をつけていることは何ですか？
We love how your work is simple but yet very sophisticated, especially your color schemes are amazing. Is there any tips when you decide on colors?
まずはこれを言わせて。私の作品を気に入ってくれて本当にありがとう！とても嬉しい。 そうね、お店に売っている単色の生地はできるだけそろえてある。ソリッドなカラーを使うのが好きだから。作品を作る上で、手元にあらゆる素材を持っていることは大切。通常、まずはデザインを考えてそれから色を選んでいるわ。ここは自分の直感的感覚が問われる行程ね。 アドバイスできることがあるとすれば...そうね。自分のまわりにあるものに注意深く目を向けてみること。アートやファッション、建築や自然など。美しいものやインスピレーションはあなたのまわりに溢れているから！ First, thank you so much for finding my work inspiring! It makes me really happy!I usually buy all the colors I can find on stores, since I like to work only with solid colors.Having variety of material is important!Usually I think of a design I’d like to try first and then choose the colors. It’s a very instinctive process.If I can offer any tip, it would be to always pay attention around you, look at art, fashion, Architecture, nature! There’s beauty and inspiration everywhere!
夢はありますか？５年後になにをしていると思いますか？ Where do you see yourself in 5 years? もちろんパッチワークを続けてるわ！願わくば、教えられるぐらい技術をあげて、それからもっと独創的な作品を作っていきたい。 I’m sure I’ll still be patchworking! Hopefully in five years I’ll know enough to teach and develop a more authorial style! PWLの読者に向けてメッセージをお願いします。
